New York Rangers GM Announces Major Team Changes Ahead of Playoffs Push

New York, NY – April 14, 2025 – The New York Rangers are making waves ahead of the final stretch of the 2024-25 NHL season. General Manager Chris Drury announced three significant changes to the team lineup and structure in a press conference this morning, signaling a strategic shift as the Rangers aim to strengthen their playoff position.

1. Assistant Coach Reassignment
In a surprise move, Assistant Coach Gord Murphy will transition to a more development-focused role with the Hartford Wolf Pack, the Rangers’ AHL affiliate. The decision comes amid growing concerns about the team’s defensive inconsistency. Drury emphasized that Murphy’s experience will be invaluable in mentoring young prospects. Former NHL defenseman and current player development advisor, Dan Girardi, will step in to fill the assistant coaching vacancy on an interim basis.

2. Roster Shake-Up: Forward Called Up
The Rangers have called up 21-year-old forward Brennan Othmann from Hartford. Othmann, a 2021 first-round pick, has impressed with 24 goals and 31 assists this season in the AHL. “Brennan’s offensive production and energy are what we need right now,” said Drury. Othmann is expected to slot into the team’s third line, adding depth and scoring potential as the team navigates crucial upcoming games.

3. Goalie Rotation Change
In another bold decision, Drury confirmed that Igor Shesterkin and Jonathan Quick will now operate on a rotational schedule through the remainder of the regular season. This change is aimed at keeping both netminders fresh and competitive as the Rangers eye a deep playoff run. “We want to be smart with our goaltending workload,” Drury explained. “Both guys give us a chance to win every night.”
