NFL punter arrested after protesting ‘MAGA’ on proposed Huntington Beach library plaque……
Former NFL punter Chris Kluwe was arrested during a Huntington Beach City Council meeting on February 18, 2025, following his protest against a proposed library plaque featuring the acronym “MAGA.” The plaque, intended to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Huntington Beach Central Library, used the words “Magical,” “Alluring,” “Galvanizing,” and “Adventurous” to form the controversial acronym associated with former President Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan.
Kluwe, a Huntington Beach resident and outspoken activist, addressed the council during the public comment session, expressing his concerns about the plaque’s political implications. He criticized the MAGA movement, describing it as a “corrupt, Nazi movement” and highlighting issues such as attempts to erase transgender individuals, reintroduce segregation, and censor literature.
Following his remarks, Kluwe announced his intention to engage in “peaceful civil disobedience” and approached the council members. Police officers intervened, arresting him for disrupting an assembly. He was detained for approximately four hours before being released.
The proposed plaque has sparked significant controversy within the community, with critics arguing that it introduces partisan politics into a public institution. Despite its approval by the council, opposition persists, with many residents and observers expressing concern over the politicization of public spaces.
Kluwe, who played for the Minnesota Vikings from 2005 to 2012, is well-known for his social activism, particularly advocating for LGBTQ+ rights. He has previously alleged that his advocacy contributed to the premature end of his NFL career.
This incident underscores the ongoing debates surrounding the intersection of politics and public spaces, as well as the broader discourse on free speech and civil disobedience in contemporary society.
