In a thrilling ACC Championship game on December 7, 2024, the No. 18 Clemson Tigers edged out the No. 8 SMU Mustangs with a last-second 56-yard field goal, clinching a 34-31 victory and securing their spot in the College Football Playoff (CFP). The game, held in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a rollercoaster of emotions, showcasing resilience and determination from both teams.
Clemson’s quarterback, Cade Klubnik, delivered an impressive performance, throwing for 262 yards and four touchdowns. His connection with wide receiver Bryant Wesco was particularly noteworthy; Wesco amassed eight receptions for 143 yards and two touchdowns in the first quarter alone, propelling the Tigers to an early 21-7 lead. Tight end Jake Briningstool also contributed significantly, securing two short touchdown receptions. Despite a challenging season that included a loss to rival South Carolina, Klubnik’s leadership was instrumental in guiding Clemson to their ninth ACC Championship under coach Dabo Swinney.
On the opposing side, SMU’s quarterback Kevin Jennings showcased remarkable poise, completing 31 of 50 passes for 304 yards and three touchdowns. Jennings also added a rushing touchdown to his tally. Running back Brashard Smith was a dual threat, rushing for 113 yards on 24 carries and adding six receptions for 34 yards, including a touchdown. Wide receiver Roderick Daniels Jr. contributed eight catches for 97 yards and a touchdown. Despite trailing 24-7 at halftime, the Mustangs mounted a formidable comeback, tying the game at 31-31 with just 16 seconds remaining, thanks to Jennings’ 4-yard touchdown pass to Daniels.
The game’s climax was nothing short of dramatic. Following SMU’s tying touchdown, Clemson’s Adam Randall returned the kickoff 41 yards, positioning the Tigers near midfield. Klubnik then connected with Antonio Williams for a 17-yard gain, setting the stage for freshman kicker Nolan Hauser. Despite previous struggles, including a missed 44-yard attempt earlier in the game, Hauser confidently nailed the 56-yard field goal as time expired, marking the longest field goal in ACC Championship history and sealing the victory for Clemson.
This victory not only added another ACC title to Clemson’s storied history but also secured their seventh berth in the College Football Playoff. Coach Swinney praised his team’s resilience, stating, “What a way to win… To head to the playoffs for the seventh time, man, the heart of our guys. We have been so close but we found a way.”
For SMU, the loss was a bitter pill to swallow, especially after such a valiant comeback effort. Coach Rhett Lashlee expressed pride in his team’s performance, emphasizing their determination and skill. Despite the setback, the Mustangs’ impressive 11-2 season record and strong performance in their inaugural ACC season have solidified their reputation as a formidable program.
As both teams look ahead, Clemson prepares for their upcoming playoff journey, while SMU awaits their postseason fate, hopeful for a bowl invitation that reflects their outstanding season performance.
