Josh Addo-Carr breaks his silence on his Canterbury Bulldogs exit

In a heartfelt message, Josh Addo-Carr has addressed his departure from the Canterbury Bulldogs, expressing gratitude to fans, teammates, and the club’s administration. The 29-year-old winger’s contract was terminated following a positive cocaine test during a routine roadside check in September 2024. Despite the circumstances, Addo-Carr conveyed deep appreciation for his time at Belmore.

“To all the Bulldogs fans and family, thank you for a memorable 3 years,” Addo-Carr shared on Instagram. “The love and support you’ve shown me since I arrived at Belmore has always been amazing and the memories will last forever.” He also extended thanks to the club’s sponsors, board members, teammates, and coaching staff, highlighting the strong bonds formed during his tenure.

Reflecting on his arrival in 2022, Addo-Carr noted his commitment to revitalizing the club during challenging times. “I came to the Bulldogs in 2022, a time when the club was struggling and at a low point,” he stated. “I wanted to help bring back the club to the powerhouse it once was and most importantly, I wanted to help build a winning culture.” He expressed pride in contributing to the team’s turnaround over the past three years.NRL 2024: Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs sack Josh Addo-Carr, contract termination, roadside drug test, contracts, news, videos, highlights

The incident leading to his dismissal occurred in September 2024, when Addo-Carr was subjected to a random roadside drug test that returned a positive result for cocaine. Despite his assertion of not knowingly ingesting the substance, the Bulldogs’ administration viewed the failed test and subsequent lack of transparency as serious breaches of his contractual obligations. Chairman Adam Druissi emphasized the club’s commitment to maintaining clear standards and values, stating, “This season has demonstrated the importance of building a culture based on clear standards and values.”

In the aftermath, Addo-Carr took up a laboring job, describing it as a “reality check” and a means to provide for his family during uncertain times. He maintained a positive outlook, expressing no ill will toward the Bulldogs and acknowledging the support from his family and close friends. “It was very, very tough but I had the right people in my corner at the time,” he reflected.

Looking ahead, Addo-Carr has signed a two-year deal with the Parramatta Eels, set to commence in the 2025 season. He is eager to bring his experience and leadership to his new team, with Eels’ captain Mitchell Moses noting, “The leadership he has brought to the club with him has had a real impact.” Addo-Carr is slated to make his debut against his former club in Round 3, a match he anticipates will be emotionally complex. “It will be weird, it is what it is,” he commented on facing the Bulldogs.

Despite the challenges, Addo-Carr remains focused on his future in the NRL, driven by his passion for the sport and the support of his loved ones. “I’m at a period in my life where I’m happy at the club I’m at today and I just want to move on from everything,” he affirmed.
