Former Chicago White Sox Infielder Yoan Moncada Gets Surprisingly Big Contract In Free Agency
In a notable offseason move, former Chicago White Sox infielder Yoán Moncada has signed a one-year, $5 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. This agreement comes after the White Sox declined Moncada’s $25 million club option for 2025, opting instead for a $5 million buyout.

Moncada, 29, was once among baseball’s most promising prospects. He showcased his potential with a standout 2019 season, achieving a .315 batting average, 25 home runs, and 79 RBIs. However, his career has been marred by injuries, limiting his on-field contributions. In 2024, he appeared in only 12 games due to a strained adductor muscle.
The Angels’ decision to sign Moncada reflects their strategy to bolster their infield depth. With Anthony Rendon struggling with injuries since joining the team in 2019, Moncada presents a low-risk, high-reward option at third base. General Manager Perry Minasian emphasized the importance of exploring alternatives to strengthen the roster, given Rendon’s limited availability over the past seasons.
This signing also highlights the Angels’ broader approach to the offseason, as they have recently added infielders Tim Anderson and J.D. Davis on minor league deals. Moncada’s addition is expected to intensify competition for the starting
