No. 8 Buckeyes Jump to Early Lead, Cruise to 41-21 Win Over No. 1 Oregon; Ohio State Advances to CFP Semifinals vs. Texas on Jan. 10
In a thrilling showdown that left fans on the edge of their seats, the No. 8 Ohio State Buckeyes delivered a dominant performance against the No. 1 Oregon Ducks in the quarterfinals of the College Football Playoff (CFP). The Buckeyes wasted no time in asserting their dominance, jumping to an early lead and cruising to a 41-21 victory. With the win, Ohio State secured a spot in the CFP Semifinals, where they will face the Texas Longhorns on January 10.
From the opening whistle, it was clear that the Buckeyes were not intimidated by the Ducks’ top ranking. Ohio State’s offense, led by quarterback Kyle McCord and star running back TreVeyon Henderson, came out firing on all cylinders. The Buckeyes’ early aggressiveness was evident on their opening drive, as they marched down the field with ease, capitalizing on quick passes and powerful runs. McCord, who had been a revelation all season, completed several key throws, including a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr., putting Ohio State up 7-0.
Oregon, which had been riding a wave of momentum throughout the regular season, quickly found themselves on the back foot. Despite a strong season from quarterback Bo Nix, who had been spectacular in leading the Ducks’ high-powered offense, they struggled to find their rhythm early in the game. Ohio State’s defense, anchored by linebacker Tommy Eichenberg and defensive end J.T. Tuimoloau, applied relentless pressure on Nix, forcing him into several uncomfortable throws. Oregon’s first possession ended in a three-and-out, setting the tone for the rest of the game.
The Buckeyes’ offense didn’t let up after their initial touchdown. On their second drive, they took control with a balanced attack, mixing up runs and passes to keep the Ducks’ defense off balance. Henderson, who had been a key contributor all season, found the end zone with a hard-fought 3-yard touchdown run, giving Ohio State a 14-0 lead early in the second quarter. Oregon’s defense appeared rattled, unable to contain the powerful Buckeyes’ rushing attack and McCord’s efficient passing.
Oregon finally responded late in the first half, as Nix connected with wide receiver Troy Franklin for a 40-yard touchdown pass. The score cut the Buckeyes’ lead to 14-7, giving the Ducks some hope heading into halftime. However, Ohio State refused to let the momentum swing in Oregon’s favor.
The Buckeyes came out of halftime with a vengeance, quickly silencing the Ducks’ hopes of a comeback. On their opening possession of the second half, McCord orchestrated a masterful drive that culminated in a 15-yard touchdown pass to tight end Cade Stover, extending Ohio State’s lead to 21-7. Oregon’s defense, which had been so strong all season, struggled to keep up with the Buckeyes’ fast pace.
The Ducks, now facing a two-touchdown deficit, couldn’t generate enough offense to mount a serious challenge. Nix continued to face pressure from the Ohio State defensive line, and his throws were often off target. Oregon’s running game, which had been a staple of their offense, was shut down by the Buckeyes’ front seven, limiting the Ducks to just 72 rushing yards for the game.
Meanwhile, Ohio State continued to pour it on. Henderson added his second touchdown of the game in the third quarter, a 5-yard run that put the Buckeyes ahead 28-7. McCord then connected with Harrison Jr. once again, this time for a 30-yard touchdown strike that pushed Ohio State’s lead to 35-7 midway through the third quarter. The crowd at Ohio Stadium erupted, sensing that the Buckeyes were firmly in control.
Oregon tried to mount a late rally, but it was too little, too late. Nix found Franklin for a second touchdown, this one a 12-yard pass, to make it 35-14 with just under 10 minutes remaining. However, the Buckeyes answered with a field goal from kicker Noah Ruggles, extending their lead to 38-14 and effectively sealing the game.
Oregon’s last-ditch effort came in the form of a 5-yard touchdown run by running back Bucky Irving, trimming the deficit to 38-21 with just over four minutes left. But Ohio State’s defense, which had been suffocating throughout the game, held firm in the closing minutes, preventing any further scoring from the Ducks.
The Buckeyes’ dominant 41-21 victory was a statement win that showcased their offensive firepower and defensive resilience. McCord finished the game with 295 passing yards and three touchdown throws, while Henderson ran for 112 yards and two touchdowns, solidifying his status as one of the nation’s top running backs. The defense, led by Eichenberg and Tuimoloau, harassed Nix all night, finishing with four sacks and forcing multiple errant throws.
With the victory, Ohio State advances to the CFP Semifinals, where they will face the Texas Longhorns in a highly anticipated matchup on January 10. The Buckeyes will need to be at their best as they prepare to take on a talented Texas team that boasts a dynamic offense led by quarterback Quinn Ewers and running back Bijan Robinson. However, after their dominant win over Oregon, the Buckeyes have shown that they are more than capable of competing with the best teams in the nation.
For now, though, Ohio State will savor their big win over the Ducks, knowing that they are one step closer to their ultimate goal: a shot at the College Football Playoff National Championship.
