Marvin Lewis, the most successful head coach in Cincinnati Bengals history, returned to Paycor Stadium on October 29, 2024, as the assistant head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders. This visit marked his first appearance on the Bengals’ home turf since his departure in 2018.
During his 16-season tenure with the Bengals, Lewis achieved a franchise-record 131 wins and secured four division titles. His leadership was instrumental in revitalizing the team, leading them to seven playoff appearances. Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Lewis made significant contributions to the Cincinnati community through the Marvin Lewis Community Fund, which focused on educational initiatives and provided nearly $4 million in support, including scholarships for close to 100 students.
In his current role with the Raiders, Lewis serves as an assistant head coach, offering guidance and support to interim head coach Antonio Pierce. His return to Cincinnati was met with nostalgia and respect from former colleagues and players. Special teams coordinator Darrin Simmons, who joined the Bengals with Lewis in 2003, recalled Lewis’s emphasis on accountability, encapsulated in phrases like “I see better than I hear” and “Do Your Job.”
Lewis’s return also highlighted the evolution of the Bengals under current head coach Zac Taylor. Since taking over in 2019, Taylor has led the team to significant achievements, including multiple playoff victories and consecutive AFC Championship appearances. This progression underscores the strong foundation established during Lewis’s tenure and the continued growth of the franchise.
Reflecting on his return, Lewis expressed a sense of nostalgia, acknowledging Cincinnati as “home for a long time.” His enduring relationships with former staff members and the lasting impact of his community work exemplify his deep connection to the city.
