In a recent two-part documentary series, Buku Abi, the daughter of R. Kelly, alleges that she was assaulted by her father when she was a little girl.
In an episode of the “Karma: A Daughter’s Journey” television series, Abi, whom Kelly has with her ex-wife Andrea “Drea” Kelly, described her alleged sexual abuse.
“He was everything to me. I didn’t want to think it ever happened for a long time. In the documentary, Abi, whose real name is Joann Kelly, states, “I didn’t know that even if he was a bad person, he would do something to me.” She “was too scared to tell anybody,” Abi continued. I was afraid to inform my mother.
“I feel like that one millisecond completely changed my whole life and changed everything,” she added.
The imprisoned former R&B star’s appeal of his 2022 federal conviction on counts of child pornography and seducing teenage females to have sex with him—one of two cases in which he was found guilty of sex crimes—was denied by the U.S. Supreme Court on Monday. Kelly was found not guilty on seven other offenses, including conspiracy to receive child pornography and obstruction of justice, and was given a 20-year prison sentence.
‘A different person’ was Buku Abi following the alleged abuse.
Abi discusses the alleged sexual abuse in great detail in the series, stating that it occurred when she was eight or nine years old.
As she recalls, “I just remember waking up to him touching me,” she sobs. “And I had no idea what
to do, so I just lay there and acted like I was sleeping.” In her own words, “from that moment on, I was a different person.”
“It was hard to accept that it happened,” Abi adds, and she eventually had to tell her mother. She claims that the news of her mother, Drea Kelly, “completely broke her heart”
The troubled artist and his ex-wife, Drea Kelly, were married from 1996 to 2009, and Abi is one of their three children.
The singer of “I Believe I Can Fly” caused a stir in 2019 when he posted a video to Twitter and Instagram in which he sang and wished his estranged daughter a happy birthday. Your father adores you. Whatever happens, I will always and forever adore you.”
R. Kelly expressed disapproval
In order to distance herself from her father’s last name, Abi began going by a different name. In January 2019, she publicly denounced Kelly on social media, calling him a “monster” and stating that “it has been years since my siblings and I have seen or have spoken to him.” Amid the shocking accusations against her father that were shown in the “Surviving R. Kelly” documentary series on Lifetime, Abi openly discussed her connection with her father.
