The existing order does not appreciate the concept of another team “threatening” the status quo, despite Newcastle United “banging at the door.”
Football financial specialist Kieran Maguire holds that opinion. He made this statement just weeks after Manchester City contested the legality of the sponsorship regulations that were put in place following Newcastle’s 2021 takeover. In an arbitration proceeding, the victors contended that Premier League clubs took steps to’safeguard their own economic advantages’ by voting through these associated party transactions (APT) restrictions in reaction to Newcastle’s buy-out.
Amanda Staveley previously said that ‘nobody likes competition’ and the former Newcastle owner suggested that other clubs do ‘everything they can’ to ensure the Champions League places are available to ‘as few people as possible’. Newcastle still managed to finish in the top four in 2023, but the Magpies have been unable to fully maximise the backing of the club’s wealthy owners because the club’s revenues pale in comparison to those around them
